I made it to Malawi safely. Alison, the UNDP driver, was waiting for me (with a nice little sign) and that really made my night since I was pretty worried about what my options were if there was no one to greet me. It was late, too (around 11pm) and we still had to drive to Zomba, which is about 50km away.
I'm staying in a house (reminds me of those old JKR quarters in Ampang -- to my American friends, they're kinda big one-storey houses built for the British) but smaller (does that sentence even makes sense?). The landlord owns Tasty Bites (the only Western/Indian restaurant in the town, I believe) and he lives on the other end of the compound. I'm staying with three other girls (Sandy from Columbia, Eleanor from UNC, and Marie from Duke). We're all doing our internships on various projects with the MVP. However, I'm the only one who's staying until December. The rest will be here until about August. Then I'm on my own.
Anyway, so far so good. I can't say I'm loving it (yet) but I'm giving myself two weeks to settle in and then I'll reassess the situation. I guess everything is very new and I am not settled (I'm in the living room for now) and comforts of home seem so out of reach. But this builds character, no?
